NEWBURGH – The recent shootings in which people were wounded, including an 11-year-old girl, can only be solved if the entire community pitches in, Mayor Judy Kennedy said.
She invoked the saying, “if you see something, say something,” noting that there are people out there who know about certain crimes, but will not come forward.
“We’ve got to step up with some courage and we’ve got to find a way that we all cooperate,” Kennedy said.  “If you know something, we have got to get this under control, we’ve just got to. There is no such thing as standing neutral. You are either in it or you are not. If you know something and you refuse to say something about it, then you are complicit in the problem.”
If not, residents are “turning over our streets and we have a breakdown in our community,” Kennedy said.
The mayor said the police department is doing the best it can with its manpower level. It would need double the number of officers to keep a lid on the violence, she said, therefore, the public must help by providing information.
The police department does have volunteer auxiliary officers that can also act as the eyes and ears of the community, city officials said.
