Bus shelter, still awaiting repair

VAILS GATE – A bus shelter at the Five Corners in Vails Gate has had one of its plexiglass panes missing for over two years, making it difficult for commuters to stay out of inclement weather.
The pane was never replaced because it was unclear what entity actually owned the shelter – Shortline/Coach USA bus company, Orange County or the Town of New Windsor.
New Windsor residents H. Alonzo and Regine Coombs this week wrote to town, county, state and federal officials urging the repair to the bus shelter and on Wednesday, Coach USA officials announced the plexiglass pane was being replaced that day.
“This particular shelter has ownership issues (meaning undetermined),” said Rick Heller, facilities and terminal manager for Shortline/Coach USA. “I was authorized by NYSDOT (state Department of Transportation) and Orange County to go ahead and make repairs.”
The work was to have been performed on Tuesday, but it was delayed because of weather conditions.
