SOMERS – A state trooper, who rescued a yellow lab dog that had fallen into a partially frozen lake behind JFK High School in Somers on Saturday afternoon, had to be helped from the frigid water himself when the ice gave way under his weight as well.
Trooper Christopher Spallone, a 10-year veteran of the force, went to the scene and spotted the dog appearing in distress so he walked onto the ice and was able to rescue “Shelby.”
As the officer was returning to shore, the ice fractured and he fell into the water. Officer Dustin from Somers Fire Department and Somers Fireman Michael Cyrulik assisted Spallone from the icy water to shore. Dustin was also exposed to the cold water when he went into the pond to assist the trooper.
Spallone was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital by the Somers Fire Department where he was treated and released. Dustin was treated at the scene and declined further medical treatment.
“Shelby” was expected to make a full recovery.
