NEWBURGH – Fire early Thursday morning caused considerable damage to a two-story, wood-frame house at 451 Third Street in Newburgh.
The two-alarm fire was called in at 1:50 a.m., was knocked down at 2:32 a.m. and declared out at 4 a.m.  Several volunteer fire departments from adjacent areas assisted under mutual aid.
The building was vacant when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Assistant Fire Chief Robert Bain said said when firefighters arrived on the scene they found fire in the basement that had spread to the first floor.
The cause is under investigation with no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
This is the second house fire in the city in three days. On Tuesday, February 2, fire at 201 North Miller Street damaged a three-story, brick residence. It was determined the fire started in a first-floor bedroom, Bain said.
