BUCHANAN – Following the weekend leak of radioactive water leaking from three monitoring wells at the Indian Point nuclear power plant, environmental group Riverkeeper called for the facility to be shut down immediately.
Organization President Paul Gallay maintains the power plant is no longer safe to operation.
“Since May 2015, Indian Point has suffered seven major malfunctions, from pump failure to transformer explosions, to radiation leaks, power failures, fires and oil spills,” Gallay said on Monday. “In December, Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered a full investigation, and he now warns that all these accidents demonstrate that Indian Point can no longer operate safely. Indian Point should be closed pending completion of the governor’s investigation.”
Entergy officials said the radioactive water leak did not impact water on or off the site.
Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino said the county “will continue to verify and monitor the situation. Getting the facts and understanding them are critically important to serving the public interest. False hysteria is not.”
Astorino said he has contacted the Nuclear Regulatory commission “to ensure that the tritium poses no danger to the public today or at any time in the future.”
