RHINEBECK – A little less than one year after ground was broken for the Martin and Toni Sosnoff Pavilion at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, the new addition was completed.
On Wednesday, a first tour of the $47 million, three-story, 87,000 square foot, patient care pavilion, complete with high-tech medical equipment and more patient-oriented private suites, was conducted.
It was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony in honor of the donations raised by the hospital foundation. An estimated $9 million was contributed toward the total cost of the project. The hospital continues to fundraise, aiming for a goal of $10 million.
Hospital President Denise George said there were two reasons for the project.
“One, was to create an exceptional patient experience for our patients and families with the new pavilion with the private patient rooms and in keeping with that, also to continue down our journey of improving quality and patient safety; the new pavilion provides for that,” said George. “The other objective was to provide a wonderful place for our physicians and staff to work in and clearly, if they can have an excellent place with all the amenities that they need to make their job more fulfilling, then we wanted to do that as well.”
Dr. Andrew Stewart, an orthopedic surgeon who worked several times a
week in their original operating rooms, said their new third floor operating
suite is on par with the best hospitals in the state and provides a huge
advantage to, not only himself and the other surgeons but, to the patients
as well.
“This means a lot to me for a variety of reasons,” said Dr. Stewart. “Obviously, it’s a beautiful facility, it’s state-of-the-art technology, the rooms are big, easy to get in and out of, we’ve got technology in here which is the same technology you’d find in Manhattan and Albany and those ORs, high definition screens; the whole operating room is designed to be modern.”
Like the others who work at Northern Dutchess Hospital, Dr. Stewart added the patient conscious design of the new wing as being most impressive to him.
“The thing I really love about it is the way that the design of the new ORs and the hospital in general, is geared around the patient experience which is the thing I love about Northern Dutchess the most is, that here, the facility is designed to allow comfort, privacy, patient flow and it really is,” said Dr. Stewart. “Just walking through here, as an experienced surgeon, I can see how much better this will be for the patients and I think it matches the ethic of the hospital in a really beautiful way.”
What Dr. Stewart and George are referring to, as far as new patient amenities, are newly redesigned patient suites, offering complete privacy with one patient per room and many new technologies. Also, the first floor of the pavilion will act as doctors’ offices for primary care, surgeons and cardiologists; a, “One stop shop,” for patient convenience.
The pavilion will hold a public grand opening ceremony Saturday, February 6. The pavilion will open for patient care the following Saturday and the first floor physician’s offices will add the cardiology specialty in April.
