ALBANY – The State Assembly passed legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (D, Kingston) that would help ensure women’s freedom of choice regarding contraception and family planning.
Under the Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act, health insurance plans in the state would be required to cover all FDA approved categories of contraceptive drugs, devices and products and procedures, noted Cahill.
“For example previously if there was a co-payment for the prescription under a contraceptive prescription from a doctor, that copayment can no longer be charged,” he said.  “If there was a fee associated with a procedure involving family planning, that fee can no longer be imposed.  The idea here is to get people access to the care that they are guaranteed under both the Affordable Care Act and New York State law.”
Cahill expects the Senate to approve the measure as well before it goes to the governor for his action.
