ALBANY – For the 12-month period ending in December 2015, private sector employment in the Hudson Valley increased by 10,200 or 1.3 percent, to 778,200, according to the state Department of Labor.
Jobs were added in educational and health services (+8,400), natural resources, mining and construction (+4,600), other services (+2,800), and manufacturing (+200). Job losses were centered in professional and business services (-1,900), leisure and hospitality (-1,700), trade, transportation and utilities (-1,600), and financial activities (-700). The government sector shed 1,500 jobs over the period.
Educational and health services remained the region’s leading job generator. Aided by a strong healthcare component, the sector grew by 4.3 percent over the year – its strongest December year-to-year growth on record (dating back to 1991). However, it is worth noting that close to 90 percent of the growth in that sector is centered in the lower Hudson Valley Orange-Rockland-Westchester labor market area. Job growth in the natural resources, mining, and construction industry was also impressive, climbing 9.9 percent over the year – its strongest December year-to-year growth since 1999.
Statewide in December 2015, New York State’s private sector job count increased by 13,200, or 0.2%, to 7,880,000, a new record high. The statewide unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.8 percent in December.
