Gibson (on running for governor): “I’m seriously looking at it”

KINGSTON – Congressman Christopher Gibson said he’s thinking of running for Governor of New York in 2018. The popular Republican confirmed rumors of his intent, Wednesday in Kingston at the monthly Ulster County Chamber of Commerce breakfast.
On foreign policy, the retired colonel said America is tougher than ISIS.
“A lot in the headlines about the Islamic state,” Gibson said. “It’s a serious issue, and it’s a very serious threat. But I also want you to know I fought this enemy; they are not 10 feet tall. We are going to prevail. Good is going to triumph over evil on this.”
Attendees repeatedly asked Gibson whether it was true he would run for
governor, after his self-imposed four-year term limit expires at the end
of 2016.
He said he’ll make a final decision at the end of this year. “I’m seriously looking at it.” He noted that his whole family, especially wife Mary Jo, is involved with the discussion.
“I do feel a sense of a sense of duty and calling to the situation here in New York in a belief that there’s more to be done for the underlying business environment,” Gibson said.  He said corruption could be addressed through a series of important reform initiatives, including term limits, independent redistricting, plus legislative and campaign finance reform. “No pensions for felons convicted while in public office,” he proposed, to applause. “We have to restore faith in our ability to be self-governing,” Gibson said.
Gibson was met with a standing ovation by the over-capacity crowd, as he recounted his past year in the US House of Representatives. He spoke of national security and government reform, focusing remarks on veterans, education, agriculture and clean energy.
