TOWN OF SAUGERTIES – As part of the response to a fire at 11 Fel Qui Road in the Town of Saugerties, the Ulster County Fire Coordinator’s Office requested that the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) conduct the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.
The December 19 fire resulted in the death of Mount Marion Firefighter (Captain) Jack Rose
Fire Prevention and Control investigators and a canine accelerant detection team responded, met with local and county officials and worked with the assistance of personnel from the Ulster County Arson Task Force and Saugerties Police Department. Over a two-day period, OFPC examined the scene of the incident, conducted numerous interviews, and identified evidence relating to the origin of the fire and its cause.
After carefully evaluating the physical structure, related fire damage, information provided to them, and testing various hypotheses, OFPC investigators determined that the fire originated within the structure’s south wall.  OFPC Investigators classified the cause as accidental, involving the heating system, a wood stove, situated along that wall.
The investigations into the events leading up to the death of Rose is still under investigation. The cause of death however, has been determined to be result of the inhalation of superheated gases, leading to irreversible respiratory failure, subsequently resulting in cardiac arrest. Saugerties Police Detectives in collaboration with investigators from the state Department of Labor are continuing their investigation.
