GOSHEN – Orange County officials are considering creation of a social host law that would hold adults accountable for allowing minors to consume alcoholic beverages on their property.
The law is being considered in the wake of the murder of Silver Lake volunteer firefighter Justin Speights, 20, who was stabbed to death at a private house party in the Town of Crawford on New Year’s morning. He was trying to break up a fight at the home at the time he was killed.
County lawmakers will take their first look at a potential law when they
meet in committee later this week.
If adopted, Orange County would join the ranks of Dutchess, Putnam, Ulster
and Westchester in holding adult homeowners responsible for the illegal
consumption of alcohol on their property.
At the Crawford party, police said some 100 people were drinking and it is believed many were under the legal drinking age of 21.
