MOUNT VERNON – The new mayor of Mount Vernon, Richard Thomas, appointed the city’s fist Public Safety commissioner.
Robert Kelly, a 25-year-veteran of the city’s police department and former Westchester County District Attorney’s Office chief investigator in the counter-intelligence unit, will oversee the police and fire departments.
Thomas said among other things, it will save Mount Vernon $50,000 a year.
“When you consolidate the functions of the two departments, you definitely create a net savings on supplies, payroll needs and you also elevate the equipment requests when the department applies for grants,” the mayor said.  “So this makes Mount Vernon more competitive across the board, but also positions us to be even safer.”
Mayor Thomas said the police chief and fire chief will continue to be in charge of the operational aspects of their departments.
