POUGHKEEPSIE – State Police
from Troop K are warning the public about a recent phone scam reported
in its territory of the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester.
The scam involved a caller claiming to work for Obamacare, a popular name
for the Affordable Care Act.
Police said in addition to scamming money from an unsuspecting victim, scammers will say anything to obtain a victim’s personnel information. They may claim to work for a company you trust, or claim to be calling on behalf of a loved one. People should remain vigilant to protect themselves, troopers said.
Investigation determined the Obamacare call was a hoax. The Affordable Care Act would not be referred to as “Obamacare,” police said.
Police say people receiving calls should never give out their social security number, banking information, date of birth, or other personnel information to anyone over the phone. They said banks do not call and ask for that information.
If there is any doubt as to the legitimacy of the phone call or e-mail, police said recipients should verify the allegations by contacting the business using a publicly listed phone number.
