WAWARSING – A lit cigarette is believed to be the cause of a fire in an Abromowitz Road, residence in the Town of Wawarsing on Sunday.  One woman died in the fire.
The body of Patrizia Renucci, 52, was located inside the burned out home sheriff after deputies were asked by family members to conduct a welfare check on her on Sunday, January 3. An autopsy the following day determined the cause of death as asphyxia due to smoke inhalation and the manner of death accidental.
A preliminary investigation by the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office suggests the fire started inside and was caused by a lit cigarette. All smoke detectors in the house appeared to have been disabled, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Ulster County Fire Investigations Unit, Ellenville Fire Department and Ulster County Medical Examiner’s Office.
