GOSHEN – Orange County was supposed to receive almost $9 million in federal intergovernmental transfer funding to help cover the cost of operating the Valley View nursing home months ago. The money has yet to come in, but that is nothing to worry about, says County Executive Steven Neuhaus, who expects they will eventually get it.
The county is counting on that money to help balance the Valley View budget, but Neuhaus said with savings in spending, there should be no problems.
“When the IGT comes, it is always something that comes after the fact that we have closed the books and when that money comes we utilize it for future years,” he said. “Because it is just so uncertain when it comes, the best thing to do is to be able to operate without it and when it does come, you can put it into the fund so you can actually help it in future years.”
Those in county government who oppose that form of bookkeeping are concerned that if the money is not forthcoming, it could leave the county in a financial hole.
