KINGSTON – The municipal parking lot at the site of the former parking garage off Schwenk Drive in Kingston has new access in time for last minute shoppers.
Steps leading from the lot up to the shops in the Uptown Business District have been completed and are now in use.
The old garage was razed years ago for safety reasons and the city has been seeking a developer to build a mixed use commercial and residential project with hundreds of parking spaces. In the meantime, merchants approached Mayor Shayne Gallo.
In the interim waiting for a developer the merchants told Gallo they really need try to get people to use the parking lot, but there is no efficient means of getting up to North Front Street from the bottom of what used to be the parking garage.
Constructing the steps and making a curb cut for pedestrians cost the city about $75,000, the mayor said.
