MIDDLETOWN – Serious crime in Middletown has been declining in recent years, Police Chief Ramon Bethencourt told the common council Tuesday night.
The chief said the most serious offensives, part one crimes, continue their lower trend.
“The Department of Criminal Justice Service has us at 19.4 percent down, five-year average as of October 15 versus 2014, but more importantly and more significant is our five-year average in the same crime index is down 35.7 percent,” he said.  “So, over the last five years, we have shown a very significant decrease in violent crime in the city.”
Bethencourt also told the common council that with the support of the State Police, traffic tickets so far this year are over 3,700. Officers continue to patrol Highland Avenue, with over 350 speeding tickets on that street alone.
