ESOPUS – Four men are under arrest after they allegedly robbed a clerk at the Rifton Post Office on Route 213 in the Town of Esopus on Monday afternoon.
The men allegedly jumped onto the counter and stole cash and money orders after the clerk opened the drawer for a transaction.
A witness at the scene obtained a detail description of the getaway car and an Ulster countywide alert was sent out over the police radio.
A New Paltz Police officer spotted the vehicle on Route 32 in the town, stopped it and took the four occupants into custody without incident. They were all charged with felony robbery.
Charged were Gary Salmon, Jr., 21, of Newburgh; Damari Edwards, 25, of Newburgh, Shareef Goddard, 31, of Brooklyn, and Sharmaine Chambers of Hyde Park. Salmon and Chambers were each sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. Edwards and Goddard were held without bail.
Police said the four are believed to be involved in a series of incidents involving fraudulent checks, credit cards and money orders.
The investigation is continuing and additional charges are anticipated, police said.
The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by New Paltz, Plattekill and State Police and the US Postal Inspection Service.
