HUNTER – The Riverkeeper environmental organization
has sent a formal notice of intent to sue the Town of Hunter for its pollution
discharges into the Schoharie Creek.

Riverkeeper said for the past six years, the town landfill on Hylan Road
Tannersville has failed to fully treat its polluted leachate, which includes
heavy metals, ammonia and other contaminants that are discharged into
the Schoharie.

Riverkeeper said Hunter’s landfill leachate system is allowed to
discharge pollutants within the parameters of its Clean Water Act permit,
but has repeatedly exceeded its numerical limits for a variety of pollutants,
including ammonia, biological oxygen demand and has often exceeded limits
for dissolved oxygen, iron, lead, manganese, suspended solids and zinc.
