POUGHKEEPSIE – High school and middle school students who are in need of personal hygiene items, packages socks, underwear, t-shirts, mittens, hats and the like, may get assistance from the Poughkeepsie City School District thanks to teachers Jennifer Burke and Demetra Kapogiannis, the community and city police officers.
The high school teen closet opened Tuesday to provide students who cannot
afford those purchases.
Discretion is important for the program to work, said teacher Jennifer Burke.
“What we have done is we have set up a private e-mail. Basically a student can e-mail the teen closet,” Burke said.  “There is no name on the m-mail and it goes directly to me and to a social worker. They can tell us what they need. We can package it up and they can tell us where to drop it off – it could be the gym; it could be anywhere. It’s all anonymous and the kids won’t be embarrassed to reach out for help.”.
That e-mail address is PHSTeenCloset@poughkeepsieschools.org.
