MIDDLETOWN – By a unanimous vote, the Middletown Common Council Tuesday night adopted a 2016 budget of about $38 million.
The spending plan, which stays under the state tax cap making residents eligible for tax refunds, relies on one-shot revenues, said Mayor Joseph DeStefano.
“The non-repetitive revenues represent 8.3 percent in taxes. So if we were going to raise taxes to cover that amount, it would result in 8.3 percent additional in taxes,” DeStefano said. “So you see the significance of having to make some structural change in how we do business.”
The administration will look at cheaper ways to buy electricity and handle garbage collection.
