TOWN OF GOSHEN – Authorities are still trying to understand why a former Newburgh City deputy police chief killed his former girlfriend on Saturday morning and then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life, State Police at Middletown said.
Patrick Sorrentino, 55, of Marlboro, had dated Marie Giannone, 55, of Goshen, for about 18 months before they broke up, investigators said.  Investigators said he had become withdrawn and angry after the breakup.
Troopers were called to the area of Finnegan Lane in the Town of Goshen at around 8:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of several shots fired.  They found Giannone sitting behind the wheel of her vehicle dead from multiple gunshots. A short distance away they found Sorrentino dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Newburgh Police Chief Daniel Cameron said the department extends “our deepest sympathy to all those that have been affected by this tragedy.” Cameron said, “It saddens us that Patrick Sorrentino took the life of an innocent person prior to taking his own. Our hearts go out to everyone that is grieving from this senseless act.”
Sorrentino was hired by the City of Newburgh Police on April 3, 1983. In March of 2002 he was placed on leave due to a physical injury. He remained on injury leave until he was officially retired on March 22, 2007.
