SUGAR LOAF – The Orange County Land Trust is backing an effort to renew and make permanent an expired federal incentive that has aided in land conservation efforts.
While the U.S. House has approved the measure, the Senate has not.
Land Trust Executive Director James Delaune said it would provide a significant incentive for those seeking a conservation easement on their property in Orange County and nationwide.
“The federal government has provided certain incentives that have to do with that easement being considered a charitable donation so there was an impact to folks who went ahead and did a conservation easement with respect to their income tax,” Delaune said. “That program expired last year and there is a movement now to have it reinstated.”
Senator Charles Schumer has already gone on record in support of the incentive.
