Man charged with stealing pocketbook during funeral

ELLENVILLE – An Ellenville man is charged with stealing a pocketbook from the parking lot of a funeral home while a funeral was taking place inside.
David Barnes, 28, was spotted by an off-duty Town of Poughkeepsie police officer, who was attending the funeral at Loucks Funeral Home. Barnes took off on a bicycle and the officer called Ellenville Village Police.
He was located, after he ditched the bike and hid behind a business on Route 209. He was arrested without incident and all of the proceeds from the crime were recovered.
Barnes was charged with petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and for being a parole absconder.  He is in the Ulster County Jail without bail pending a future court appearance.
