GOSHEN – Goshen resident
Scott Smith has announced his intention to run for the 18th congressional
district seat currently held by Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney of Cold
Spring.

Smith is seeking support as an independent, unaffiliated candidate. “I
am running because I believe our country is in trouble and I believe our
government and our institutions are failing us,” he said.

A 41-year-old teacher, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress once before,
Smith’s philosophy of governing involves “public service above
self-interest,” would serve for no more than eight to 10 years and
collect no income beyond his salary.

Smith tried to run in the last election against Maloney and the incumbent
Republican, Nan Hayworth, but was booted off the ballot for having insufficient
petition signatures. Maloney went on to defeat Hayworth.
