HIGHLAND –
Five tractor-trailers were damaged when fire swept through the Park and
Ride lot on Route 9W at the intersection of Route 299 in the Town of Lloyd.

The fire was discovered around 2 a.m. on Monday with it being brought
under control by 4 a.m. The cause is under investigation, said Lloyd Police
Chief Daniel Waage.

Eleven tractor-trailers were parked on the southern area of the lot with
several, including a propane truck, on fire.

All roads were shut down in the area and residents within a three-quarter
mile area of the parking lot were evacuated because of the potential danger
of the propane tanker exploding from the extreme heat of the fire.

Five of the tanker-trailers were damaged. Two adjacent propane tractor-trailer
tankers were removed from the area and catastrophic failure of a third
propane tanker which was in the center of the fire scene was averted through
the application of large amounts of water to cool the tanker down.

Assistance was provided to the Highland Fire Department from the Esopus
Fire Department, Kingston City Fire Department Haz-Mat, and Mobile Life
ambulance.

Lloyd Police received assistance from State Police and Ulster County Sheriff’s
deputies.
