NEW CITY – A Spring Valley man faces up to four years in state prison when sentenced in January after his conviction on charges relating to his demand for “ransom” for a stolen wallet.
On September 2, 2014 a Rockland woman mistakenly left her wallet, with cash, credit cards and ID, at the Spring Valley Post Office.
Roberto Torres, 55, contacted the woman and Spring Valley Police the following day claiming to have found the wallet outside the post office. Torres than attempted to “ransom: the property back, refusing to return the wallet unless payment was made.
Spring Valley detectives encountered Torres, who told them he had thrown the wallet into the Hudson River before attempting again to ransom it and its contents.  Police later recovered the wallet and credit cards under Torres’ bed with some $60 missing.
He was convicted after a jury trial of six counts of felony criminal possession of stolen property.
