WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives has adopted an amendment sponsored by Rep. Christopher Gibson (R, NY19) directing the federal Department of Transportation to create a comprehensive strategy within the next year to address “structurally deficient” and “functionally obsolete” bridges.
The nation’s bridges “are in desperate need of repair,” Gibson told his colleagues on Tuesday.
“In New York this is especially true. In 2015, the American Society of Civil Engineers graded New York’s network of bridges a dismal D+. New York ranked second worst in the nation in ‘functionally obsolete’ bridges and 12th worst when it comes to ‘structurally deficient’ bridges,” he told colleagues. “This is not an issue limited to New York. Across the nation, more than one in nine bridges are graded as ‘structurally deficient’ and more than 84,000 ‘functionally obsolete’ bridges are still in use.”
Gibson’s amendment was co-sponsored by Congressmen Sean Patrick
Maloney (D, NY18), John Katko (R, NY24), and Jerry Nadler, (D, NY10).
