NEWBURGH – City Manager Michael Ciaravino declared a state of emergency from noon on Thursday until further notice following Wednesday’s discovery of a sewer overflow pipe collapse under Water Street.
A portion of the street was closed off because of the potential threat
to public health and safety. The sink hole is 11 feet below the surface
of the road and is some six feet wide and 15 feet long.
Ciaravino hopes city crews will be able to perform the repair work in-house.
On Friday, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney and County Executive Steven Neuhaus will be in Newburgh to call on Congress to reauthorize funding for FEMA, which hasn’t been renewed since 2011.
