MONROE – Town of Monroe officials and owners of the former Eitz Chaim Synagogue are nearing an agreement for the town to purchase their former house of worship.
Supervisor Harley Doles said the building would be used for a number of functions.
“It would be a town center where all of the elements of community would be under one building, both on a recreational end from an administrative end all the other components that make the town unique and where government services would be provided under one building instead of many,” Doles said.
The current town hall has been determined to be contaminated with mold.
Under the proposal plan to take over the Eitz Chaim building, the town would pay $100,000 for each of the first two years of the agreement followed by a payment of $2.8 million.
The purchase would be subject to a permissive referendum.
