TOWN OF MONROE – The former Monroe town landfill is will be transformed into a large solar farm. Town officials broke ground for the project on Tuesday.
It will cost the town nothing. The On Force Solar company will fund and install the more than 6,000 panels with the local IBEW.
Town Supervisor Harley Doles said the facility, when complete, is expected to save the town $50,000 to $70,000 per year in utility bills. It will have an added benefit, he said.
“The company On Force Solar has committed that they will hire our disabled workers as part of their workforce in the creation and the maintenance of the solar farm,” Doles said. “That is a nice plus because government does not have any kind of a formalized – at least in Orange County – department where the disabled are able to get work,” he said.
In addition to the working solar farm, the project will include a solar education center for students.
