Pelton Mansion sits on part of the property

POUGHKEEPSIE – The sale of Wheaton Park property in Poughkeepsie may go forward subject to city common council approval as Governor Cuomo has signed state legislation allowing the sale.
Steven Tinkelman and Wayne Nussbickel, owners of Pelton Partners, want to purchase the property and move forward with their project to revitalize the Mt. Carmel neighborhood.
Mayor John Tkazyik, who supports the plan, encouraged the common council to approve the sale.
“If the council rejects the sale that’s going to leave a giant hole in the 2015 city budget because the common council balanced their budget just about with the sale of real property and this parcel is included in that revenue projection,” Tkazyik said.
If approved by the council, the Wheaton Park project would then proceed through the planning board process before receiving the final go ahead.
The city purchased the land in 1911. In recent years the Poughkeepsie Day Nursery occupied the Pelton Mansion there until that agency closed its doors over a year ago.
Pelton Partners’ proposes building apartments and townhouses.  They also say they will preserve and improve some of the property’s green space.
Some $500,000 would also go toward improvements to other parks in the city.
The measure seeking approval to sell the parkland was sponsored in the State Senator by Susan Serino and in the Assembly by Frank Skartados.
