MIDDLE HOPE – Police are
investigating an apparent suicide on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge Sunday
night. A search, which was suspended late Sunday, was resumed on Monday.

At about 8:15 P.M., Newburgh Town Police responded to the eastbound side
of the bridge for a report that someone had just jumped into the river
from the pedestrian walkway.

Police Chief Michael Clancy said the first officer on the scene was told
by a witness that a man had jumped. A resident on the west side of the
bride also provided supporting information to police.

A search was conducted with several fire companies including boats from
Newburgh and West Point fire departments. State Police and their Aviation
Unit also worked with town police, but after several hours, the search
for the man was called off.

Information as to his possible identity is not being made public at this
time as police continue to investigate.
