KINGSTON – A 63-year-old Kingston man,
who entered into a suicide pact with his wife, was sentenced in Ulster
County Court on Wednesday to five years probation.

Paul Egan pled guilty to promoting a suicide attempt as a non-violent
felony.

The case stems from the death of his wife, Catherine, of complications
from carbon monoxide poisoning at the couple’s home on January 12,
2015.

At that time, Egan stuffed clothing in a furnace ventilation duct allowing
fumes to permeate throughout the house.

When a family member could not reach the couple by phone, they asked Kingston
Police to check on their welfare. They found Catherine Egan unconscious.
She died days later in a hospital.

Egan survived the suicide pact.

During the investigation, he cited medical difficulties and depression
that led to he and his wife to enter into the pact.
