TOWN OF WALLKILL – After a 14-year effort, the Wallkill Town Board voted to protect the Shawangunk Kill as it flows through the town.
The board has approved creation of the Shawangunk Kill Protection Overlay, which Town Supervisor Daniel Depew said will go a long way in protecting the waterway.
“This overlay will prevent people from clear-cutting within 100 feet of the high river flow of the river’s banks, which will help protect it as a trout stream and it also regulates people’s ability to build structures, put septic systems, store chemicals or to adversely use large equipment near the Shawangunk Kill’s bank,” he said.
Depew said it is hoped that the adjacent Town of Mamakating will enact
similar legislation to protect the banks on both sides of the stream.
