GOSHEN – Orange County Legislator Shannon Wong is stepping down
from her position effective November 4 to take the job as director of
the New York Civil Liberties Union’s Lower Hudson Valley Chapter.

Wong wrote that she has “a deep passion for social justice and civil
rights. That’s why I am so excited to begin the next stage of my
career at the NYCLU.”

“When I began my campaign in 2012, I was on a mission to put people
over politics, to work with everyone to respond to the needs of our county
and to help the constituents of my district,” she wrote in a letter
to top county officials. “I also had three core priorities: renovate
the Orange County Government Center, protect Valley View, and support
local agriculture.”

County Legislature Chairman Stephen Brescia said Wong was a dedicated
lawmaker and she will be missed.

There are two years remaining in the four-year term. A replacement for
her will be named by the town boards in the area that she represents,
predominantly Goshen. Whoever is appointed would have to run for the final
year of the term and then run the following year for a full four-years.
