TOWN OF WALLKILL – A 22-year-old
Town of Wallkill man was talked out of jumping off the Route 302 overpass
onto Route 17 below early Tuesday morning.

Wallkill Police officers spent a little over a half hour talking to the
man, who was intoxicated and suicidal when he left his home after an altercation
with a family member. That relative called police who found the man on
the bridge. He had climbed over the fence and was threatening to jump
to the highway below.

While the officers talked with the man, State Police diverted traffic
off Route 17.

The man was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center for evaluation
by Town of Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Police later learned the man had broken a window at a CITGO gas station
on Route 302 before threatening to jump.
