NYACK – The John Green House, the second oldest home in Nyack, is now back in the village’s hands. Ocwen Loan Servicing agreed to turn over the dilapidated, long-abandoned building after the John Green Preservation Council presented its case for the history of the building.
Mayor Jennifer White said on Tuesday that the 1817 house has significance given the accomplishments of its famous resident.
“He was a hard working guy who lived in South Nyack,” White said. “He actually came up with the concept of what is now Route 59. He thought that using the Hudson for schooner commutation was not the right thing so he introduced the first steam boat to the Hudson River, and his house is the second oldest house in Nyack.”
The financial institution foreclosed on the house 18 months ago. Now the preservation group will seek to restore it.
