NEW YORK – Environment New York has released its Summer Fun Index that shows New York is a fun state for activities in and around waterways.
Of the more than half of the states in the nation that were polled, New York ranks high, said Nicole Follmann, Environment New York’s clear water campaign organizer. A total of 51 million people visited state and federal parks in New York that have waterways and 197 summer camps with water facilities.
Follmann said Environment New York is also standing behind a new federal rule.
“We are trying to show support for the Clean Water Rule, which restores protection to 55 percent of New York’s streams and headwaters and wetlands, so that is actually more focused on the smaller waterways although they all feed into these larger waterways and lakes and really affect everything,” she said.
Of the 28 states surveyed, New York had the second highest number of visitors to state and national parks with waterways. Only California topped it, followed by Oregon, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
