Man feared drowned in Hudson River near Cold Spring

COLD SPRING – A man, who
was swimming in the Hudson River near Cold Spring on Tuesday afternoon
is feared drowned, Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith said.

According to preliminary reports, the victim, a 46-year-old Beacon man,
was with a group at Little Sandy Beach in the Hudson Highlands State Park
at about 4:30 p.m. and was swimming in the river in an area not protected
by lifeguards.

The man reportedly became distressed in the water and called for help,
but sank below the surface before any of his friends could reach him.
An intensive search of the river and shoreline were underway immediately
after his disappearance was reported to authorities.

The man’s name was withheld.
