KINGSTON – The Laws and Rules Committee of the Kingston Common Council has voted unanimously to “ban the box,” removing the question asking city job seekers if they have been in prison.
Committee Chairman Brad Will said it is believed giving ex-cons more of a chance at finding work will reduce recidivism.
“It’s about giving applicants a fair chance and a second chance to apply for jobs with the city,” Will said. “Right now there is a concern, in not just Kingston but across the country, that recidivism is real and needs to be dealt with.”
The committee vote to “ban the box” was unanimous and Will believes the full common council will approve the proposal.
Earlier this month the Newburgh City Council also voted to “ban the box.”
