Benmoshe Road closed to through traffic
TOWN OF THOMPSON – Town officials in Thompson have closed Benmoshe
Road between Rapp Road and Kaufman Road due to the failure of a large
culvert installed by the state in the late 1950s.
Through traffic is totally restricted. Local traffic is permitted only
to the barricaded closure area.
Superintendent of Highways Richard Benjamin said the town board has appropriated
emergency repair funds to purchase a new culvert, which is expected to
be delivered the week of September 1. He said work would begin as soon
as possible with hopes of having it completed by mid-September of earlier.
Town Supervisor William Rieber, Jr. said the pipe was at the end of its
useful life and was scheduled to be replaced. “The bottom of the
culvert deteriorated from rust and corrosion. Recent heavy rain events
accelerated the undermining the culvert causing potential safety issues,”
he said.
