NEWBURGH – Former Newburgh Mayor Nicholas Valentine, a Republican, has thrown his support behind Democratic Mayor Judy Kennedy.
Kennedy faces a three-way Democratic primary election on September 10 against former city and Orange County Democratic Party Chairman Jonathan Jacobson and community activist Omari Shakur.
Valentine said he supports the programs that Kennedy has implemented and the direction at which she is taking the city.
“That comes down to projects that are being developed here, new people that are coming into town, development along the Liberty Street corridor; there is just a host of things that I think the current mayor has been responsible for and has played on and some of the things I started and tried to get moving,” he said.
The primary winner will face former Councilman John Giudice, a Reupblican, in November.
Valentine, who calls Giudice “a friend,” said he has been out of the loop for too long to be an effective mayor.
