RAMAPO – Fire Monday afternoon destroyed a home at 134 Union Road in the Town of Ramapo leaving a couple and their four children homeless. All family members escaped unharmed and found shelter with family members.
Two firefighters were treated at the scene by Spring Hill Ambulance. One volunteer, from Hillcrest, suffered first-degree burns to his hand and legs and refused medical treatment. The other firefighter from Thiells Fire Department was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for heat related symptoms.
When 911 was called to alert about the blaze at around 1:40 p.m., staff was told that it may be coming from the grill on the deck in the rear of the house. When firefighters got to the scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown.
Several area fire departments were on the scene to extinguish the flames.
