TOWN OF ULSTER – Police in the Town of Ulster are alerting area residents and shoppers to a scam being perpetrated in the shopping district of the town.
Police said a tall black man with a large build and shaved head has been approaching shoppers who are returning to their vehicles in the parking lots of local businesses.
The man asks for a jump start or other assistance for his car. Once the shopper agrees to help, the shopper is asked to drive the man to his vehicle, redirecting the person several times in the parking area. During the ride, the man will ask for money for various reasons.
Police Chief Anthony Cruise said the shopper usually feels compelled to pay the man because he is in their vehicle and the shopper wishes to end an uncomfortable situation.
“The male does not threaten any type of harm, but rather fraudulently accosts money from you,” Cruise said.
If approached, the chief said shoppers should decline providing assistance and not allow the man inside their vehicle. They should immediately call the Ulster Police at 845-382-1111, he said.
