POUGHKEEPSIE – The Poughkeepsie City Police Department is in the process of forming a Civilian Patrol Program, a neighborhood watch program where residents volunteer to patrol their neighborhoods and report criminal activity to the police department.
A steering committee has been formed, which is reviewing the rules, regulations and operating procedures required by the program.
To become involved, email Lt. Richard Wilson at civilianpatrol@cityofpoughkeepsie.com .
Several years ago, local chapters of the Guardian Angels, first formed in New York City, were established in Poughkeepsie, Kingston and Newburgh. The civilian patrol members, who wore trademark red berets, were to patrol the streets adding additional ears and eyes for the police departments. Those groups have disappeared from Mid-Hudson cities.
