TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Police are continuing to investigate two shootings in the same residential neighborhood off Route 52 behind the Winona Lake Firehouse in the Town of Newburgh.
No one was hit in either the early Saturday morning incident or the second one just before 9:30 p.m. on Monday.
Town Police Chief Michael Clancy said they are investigating the possibility of any connection between the two incidents.
“That is part of the investigation because of the close proximity of the two locations and the short timeframe in between in an area that really doesn’t have too many problems at all,” Clancy said. “We can’t rule out that there is some kind of connection, but we haven’t found anything definitive yet.”
At about 2:20 Saturday morning, officers were called to a report of several gunshots fired near 48 Innis Avenue.
An 18-year-old man told police that he was sitting in his car by his house when a white SUV with several occupants pulled up. Someone in that vehicle called to him to walk over to the SUV.
Another car starting coming down the street and the SUV pulled away as the 18-year-old walked into his house and the SUV came down the street again. It stopped next to the other car and an occupant fired several rounds into the driver’s side of the car.
The SUV then fled the scene and police recovered several shell casings and bullet evidence.
Clancy said the victim could not describe the occupants.
Just before 9:30 Monday evening, town police were called to 18 Waring Road for a report of several gunshots. Several rounds struck the house while the residents were home with the wife sitting in the living room when the shots were fired. At least one round lodged in the living room ceiling.
No one was injured and that investigation is continuing.
