MOUNT VERNON – Following the death of Raynette Turner while in police custody in the City of Mount Vernon last week, clergy, church and community leaders held a prayer vigil for her family on Tuesday.
Turner died while in police custody after she was arrested on a charge of petit larceny.
While the vigil was not meant to make accusations about how she died, Bishop Collie Edwers, president of the United Black Clergy of Westchester, who led the vigil, said it was held to express their sympathy to the family and urge unity.
“We wanted to use this as a time for healing as well as lifting, as we see it, an awareness of this event,” he said.
Bishop Edwers said the clergy support the independent investigation by the state attorney general’s office.
