MIDDLETOWN – The old Woolworth building
that fronts on North Street will be redeveloped by the City of Middletown
for retail and office use.
The city has hired an architectural firm to design plans that will see a portion of the building torn down to make way for a walkway trail.
Mayor Joseph DeStefano said the building would be redeveloped for business expansion.
“We will have four retail outlets – we have a huge demand for space downtown – between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet of space and we are hoping to operate it initially as a business incubator for the enticement of new business and possibly expansion of some businesses downtown that are looking for space,” he said.
DeStefano said boutique stores that cannot afford mall rentals are looking
to come back to the city’s downtown area.

Last December, the plan was parking. Now, the property will become mixed business and retail.
