TOWN OF RAMAPO – Work is about to
begin to address the contamination at the Ramapo paint sludge site operable
unit two at Torne Valley Road area in the Town of Ramapo. The work will
be performed under the state’s Superfund Program.

The site is a location where paint sludge was reportedly disposed of when
the Ford Motor Company operated an automobile assembly plant in Mahwah,
New Jersey several years ago.

The remedial work will consist of excavation and off-site disposal of
visible paint sludge to the extent feasible and to a depth of eight feet
below grade where necessary; removal of surface soils exceeding restricted-residential
soil cleanup levels; and off-site disposal of plaint sludge beneath berms
in the flood plain of the Torne Brook.

Excavated areas will be backfilled with clean fill, a two-foot site cover
will be installed and the area will be re-vegetated.
